Bette ~ The Complete Series ~ Collector's Edition
2000-2001 ~ CBS. 3 dvd set
Contains all 18 episodes* of Bette Midler's short-lived sitcom on CBS.
Each DVD complete with Menu / Episode Selection and the series is shown in its widescreen format of 1.78:1.
Bette premiered on October 11, 2000 . Bette Midler plays herself - a divine celebrity who is adored by her fans.
To apply some ambiguity, neither Bette's last name nor that of her on-screen family's was used, to create the offset that there was some difference between the star's real-life and TV persona.
The core of the stories focused on Bette's personal life in her luxurious Los Angeles home. Her husband of nearly 20 years, Roy ( Kevin Dunn , eps. 1-12; Robert Hays , eps. 16-18) was an earnest college history professor, and their 13-year-old daughter, Rose ( Lindsay Lohan , pilot episode; Marina Malota , eps. 2-18) was bright, active, and not the least bit fazed by her mother's celebrity.
During the series' run, slightly-fictional Bette recorded a new album, engaged in hijinks at award shows, won a Grammy, made guest roles on series such as JAG and Family Law (a cross promotion by CBS), and starred in a TV Halloween special with Dolly Parton (who appeared as herself, and was said to be longtime friend of the Bette character; Parton and Midler are friends in real life).
A "one-season wonder", 16 episodes were aired on CBS, with its final telecast onMarch 7, 2001 .
For the first time, this DVD set contains all 18 episodes.

NTL Everyman
Chiwetel Ejiofor takes the title role in this dynamic new production of one of English drama’s oldest plays, directed by the National Theatre’s new Director Rufus Norris .
Everyman is successful, popular and riding high when Death comes calling. He is forced to abandon the life he has built and embark on a last, frantic search to recruit a friend, anyone, to speak in his defence. But Death is close behind, and time is running out.
One of the great primal, spiritual myths, Everyman asks whether it is only in death that we can understand our lives. A cornerstone of English drama since the 15th century, it now explodes onto the stage in a startling production with words by Carol Ann Duffy, Poet Laureate, and movement by Javier De Frutos.

Fifth of July:
Highlighted by Swoosie Kurtz's Tony Award-winning performance, this 1982 recording of Fifth of July preserves what is likely to remain the definitive production of Lanford Wilson's highly acclaimed play. Originally presented on PBS's American Playhouse, the videotaped performance retains director Marshall W. Mason's original 1978 staging for New York's legendary Circle Repertory Company, while allowing TV director Kirk Browning to "open up" the play with outdoor exteriors of Wilson's Lebanon, Missouri, setting in the summer of 1977. It's there that Kenneth (Richard Thomas), a disabled Vietnam veteran, is reunited with several friends from their days as student activists, reflecting on their past, present, and future with varying degrees of trepidation, hope, and wisdom. Groundbreaking in its casual portrayal of an openly gay couple (Jeff Daniels is superb as Kenneth's supportive lover),Fifth of July clearly influenced The Big Chill, offering a formidable acting showcase to a young cast (including Sex and the City's Cynthia Nixon) whose careers were boosted by this one-of-a-kind ensemble experience.

The Fig Leaves Are Falling, according to UnsongMusicalsCo., "is a swinging '60s satire of suburban life, love and infidelity. Variety show meets vaudeville in this lively entertainment following Harry Stone, his devoted wife and the sizzling secretary who turns their marriage upside down! This newly revised production refocuses the original story by employing a smaller cast of eight actors, three new musical numbers and previously discarded dialogue and lyrics.

The playwright Jeffrey Hatcher has massaged the libretto and written additional material, most prominently an entire scene featuring Queen Victoria, with lyrics that include: There is none that is finer/And shes the one/That we call Regina. The goal, sadly unattained, appears to have been something along the lines of Monty Pythons Pinafore. With its Broadway-style choreography (by David Bolger) and its disco and rock-opera orchestrations (by Andrew Cooke), the show strongly resembles a musical trying out for New York. In The Heights: Chasing Broadways Dream

In the Heights: Chasing Broadway Dreams chronicles the personal stories of composer/lyricist Lin-Manuel Miranda and the cast of In the Heights in the months leading up to opening night. Making it in New York City is tough. Few get the chance to live out their dreams, and the cast and crew of In the Heights know this all too well. This young, diverse group of relatively unknown artists and performers have dreamed of making it on Broadway, but are well aware that a new original musical set outside a bodega in the Latino neighborhood of Washington Heights is a highly risky proposition. It took eight years in all, but they succeeded beyond their wildest expectations, winning four Tony Awards along the way, including Best Musical and Best Score for a Musical." In addition to thrilling extended performance sequences of the original cast of In the Heights onstage at the Richard Rodgers Theatre on Broadway, this Great Performances program offers an intimate look at the production backstage and off-stage.

Men are Not Gods
Men Are Not Gods is a 1936 British film starring Miriam Hopkins and co-starring Gertrude Lawrence, Sebastian Shaw andRex Harrison. It was a success in the UK when released largely due to the popularity of the two female stars Hopkins and Lawrence. This also brought to attention the talents of Rex Harrison who made his breakthrough into Hollywood not too long after this film. Gertrude Lawrence, although not so much a movie actress, was at the peak of her stage career when this film was released and her performance was praised.

Oh What A Lovely War!
1963 ~ Dutch TV
RARE! This appears to be a recording of the original London cast filmed for Dutch TV. In English, with Danish credits after the show. Created by Charles Chilton, Joan Littlewood and the ensemble Theatre Workshop cast, and directed by Littlewood, Oh! What A Lovely War blends vaudevillian sketches highlighting the farce of war with images of World War I and nauseating statistics. The actors, performing a variety of roles throughout the course of the show, wore commedia dellarte style black and white costumes, and some of the most popular songs of the Great War, such as Its A Long Way To Tipperary and Pack Up Your Troubles were used to underline the vulgarity of war. The sketches in the devised piece included French soldiers bleating like lambs to the slaughter as they marched into No Mans Land. A successful run at Stratford East, where The Guardians Philip Hope-Wallace described the piece as The most brilliantly imagined political comment of our theatre in all the years since the second war, saw the show transfer to the Wyndhams theatre in the West End. The show cemented its reputation by winning the Grand Prix of the Theatre des Nations festival in Paris that year. In 1964 the show opened on Broadway and ran for 125 performances. Five years later Richard Attenborough transformed the stage production into a film that starred many of the West Ends major players. In black and white. Second Act ONLY-this is all the footage that survived. 63 min.

3/6/12 ~ PBS-TV
Hosted by Matthew Morrison. This compelling and extremely informative documentary profiles the man who changed American musical theater forever, Oscar Hammerstein II, legendary lyricist for over 1,000 songs and librettist for forty-five works. Writer/director/producer JoAnn Young has selected the most exemplary clips from Hammersteins iconic musicals, including two film versions of Show Boat; the rarely seen film Lady Be Good; and archival footage of the two original stars of Carousel, Jan Clayton and John Raitt. Young also has conducted new interviews with Stephen Sondheim, who considers Hammerstein as a musical and surrogate father; director/producer Harold Prince; two stars of Rodgers and Hammerstein musicals, Shirley Jones and Mitzi Gaynor, Hammerstein family members and others. This PBS film also considers Hammersteins work as a humanitarian and political activist. Archival footage also includes a rare 1958 Hammerstein television interview with CBS News' Mike Wallace and a handful of recorded conversations. His late wife Dorothy and son James are also represented in archival interviews. "Oscar Hammerstein II Out of My Dreams" also promises clips from the Rodgers and Hammerstein film musicals "Oklahoma!," "Carousel," "South Pacific," "The King and I" and "The Sound of Music"; as well as "Show Boat," co-authored with Jerome Kern, and a performance of the Academy Award-winning Kern-Hammerstein song "The Last Time I Saw Paris." Segments from the 2008 Broadway production of South Pacific appear as well. Shown during a pledge drive, so there are breaks to raise money. 90 minutes.

Passing Strange
1/10 PBS-TV
Stew, DeAdre Aziza, Coleman Domingo, Elisa Davis, Chad Goodridge, Rebecca Naomi Jones. Directed by Spike Lee. A young black musician travels on a picturesque journey to rebel against his mother and his upbringing in a church-going, middle-class, late 1970's South Central Los Angeles neighborhood in order to find "the real". He finds new experiences in promiscuous Amsterdam, with its easy access to drugs and sex, and in artistic, chaotic, political Berlin, where he struggles with ethics and integrity when he misrepresents his background as poor to get ahead. Along with his "passing" from place to place and from lover to lover, the young musician moves through a number of musical styles from a background of gospel to punk, and then blues, jazz, and rock. He finally returns home to meet his mother to find she has passed away. Based on the life of Stew who is also the Narrator. This is a film of the stage show, recorded at the Belasco Theatre, where the show ran for 165 performances. Shown as part of the PBS series Great Performances.

Pipe Dream
3/28/12 ~ Encores!
Will Chase, Laura Osnes, Leslie Uggams, Tom Wopat, James Clow, Philip Hernandez, James Moye, Steve Routman, Stephen Wallem. Produced by Encores! at City Center. Pipe Dream is the seventh stage musical by the team of Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II; it premiered on Broadway on November 30, 1955. The work is based on John Steinbeck's short novel Sweet ThursdaySteinbeck wrote the novel, a sequel to Cannery Row, in the hope of having it adapted into a musical. Set in Monterey, California, the musical tells the story of the romance between Doc, a marine biologist, and Suzy, who in the novel is a prostitute; her profession is only alluded to in the stage work. Pipe Dream was a flop and a financial disaster for Rodgers and Hammerstein. Broadway producers Cy Feuer and Ernie Martin held the rights to Sweet Thursday and wanted Frank Loesser to compose a musical based on it. When Loesser proved unavailable, Feuer and Martin succeeded in interesting Rodgers and Hammerstein in the project. As Hammerstein adapted Sweet Thursday, he and Rodgers had concerns about featuring a prostitute as female lead and setting part of the musical in a bordello. They signed operatic diva Helen Traubel to play Fauna, the house madam. As the show progressed through tryouts, Hammerstein repeatedly revised it, obscuring Suzy's profession and the nature of Fauna's house. Pipe Dream met with poor reviews, and rapidly closed once it exhausted its advance sale (lasting for only 246 performances). It had no national tour or London production, and has rarely been presented since. The Rodgers & Hammerstein Organization (which licenses their works) once hoped for a film version featuring the Muppets with Fauna played by Miss Piggy. Filmed from the balcony, with the balcony railing visible in most of the shots, but the filmer does his best to try and shoot around it. (This is probably the first time that a professional production of Pipe Dream was ever filmed!).

Gone are the Days AKA Purlie Victorious 1963
Ossie Davis,Ruby Dee, Alan Alda
This film version of the successful stage play was written by and stars Ossie Davis as Purlie Victorious, a flamboyant, self ordained minister. Along with wife Lutibelle (Ruby Dee), he returns to Georgia to buy an old barn and convert it into a church. He seeks out Captain Cotchipec (Sorrel Booke), the aging plantation owner entrusted with a $500 inheritance left by the preacher's sister after her death. Lutibelle is talked into posing as a long-lost cousin to get the money quickly from the dying landowner. Comedian Godfrey Cambridge reprises his stage role as the black plantation straw boss who pays lip service in the presence of the Captain but mercilessly mock the old man behind his back. Lutibelle gets the money from the old man with the help of his sympathetic son Charlie (Alan Alda), who is as liberal and progressive as his father is racially intolerant.. Religious hypocrisy, racial bigotry, civil rights issues and the changing Southern society backed by forced integration are subjects in this film that coincided with the turbulent social issues of the time. The title is taken from the first line of Stephen Foster's sentimental classic {&"Old Black Joe."} The film was released nearly one hundred years after the famous songwriter's death. Produced and directed by Nicholas Webster, most of the actors reprised their roles from the original stage production.

This bluegrass fairytale is loaded with innuendo, mistaken identities and wacky hijinx.
A rousing, bawdy Southern fairytale from the Pulitzer Prize-winning author of Driving Miss Daisy! The score, by Robert Waldman, is meant to be played by a small band on stage - and it's one of the only genuine bluegrass scores ever heard in a Broadway musical. Since opening on Broadway in 1975, The Robber Bridegroom has gone on to become a regional favorite.
The Robber Bridegroom is a musical with a book and lyrics by Alfred Uhry and music by Robert Waldman. The story is based on the 1942 novella by Eudora Welty of the same name, with a Robin Hood-like hero; the adaptation placed it in a late 18th-century American setting. The musical ran on Broadway in 1975 and again in 1976.

He?s soon caught up in enemy fire, and fate takes him on an extraordinary journey, serving on both sides before finding himself alone in No Man?s Land.
